When I start feeling very negative I make an effort to talk with good friends who really know me.

I take it one day at a time. Some days, I need more rest. Some days, I need a bubble bath. Some days I need therapy or an AA meeting. Some days I need a really hard workout. It’s about meeting myself where I am, over and over and over again.

I go for walks in the neighborhood (sometimes solo while listening to my favorite music, sometimes with friends), I spend time with family and friends. I enjoy my morning cup of coffee with my cat Cheese sitting on my lap. I focus on small tasks that I know I can complete to give me a sense of accomplishment.

I suffer from depression and crippling anxiety attacks. I need to be still and deep breathe. It works for me when I remember to stop and BREATHE.

First, becoming aware of my thoughts. Second, seeing how those thoughts affect my feelings. Third, learning to manage my emotions. I have been practicing this for a month now and I'm already catching a negative thought and turning it into a positive thought almost immediately. Self-talk is very important and it defines who you are becoming.

I use cooking dinner as a chance to practice mindfulness every day. I try to stay present during the cooking process and use it as quiet time to connect with myself and take a mental break from busy days.

I like to do what call "Sunshine power-ups". When I'm able, I try to go outside when the sun is out, even if it's for only 2 minutes, to get a little sunshine and change my environment. It's healing and reminds me that you can always find a little bit of joy.
