Overview

We all play a part in creating stronger, healthier, and more connected communities. A better future for everyone starts one step at a time.

What Can I Do?

  • Start Where You Are
    • Notice the groups and communities you are a part of right now. Think about what you can do to be more active within these communities.
  • Create a Safe and Fun Environment
    • Some people need a little support to feel more comfortable in a community. This could be something as simple as a smile or hello to help them feel more included. Try thinking of how you would want someone to help you feel more comfortable.
  • Try Acts of Kindness or Small Favors
    • These can make you and the person you help feel good. The connection between you and the receiver will strengthen as well. You may even find yourself feeling grateful and appreciative of others. Some examples are:
      • Give a compliment
      • Share a smile
      • Hold the door for someone, or let a driver merge in front of you in traffic
      • Buy someone a cup of coffee
      • Say thank you
  • Volunteer Locally
    • When you are giving your time, your body releases happy chemicals (endorphins) to make you feel good – and boosts your happiness.  You’ll be closer to others, feel less lonely, and may even form new friendships. Plus, many volunteer efforts involve movement or exercise – which can improve your health.
  • Shop Local Businesses
    • Support the places around you and help them grow. Tell your friends and family about the places you like to shop and the services you use. Not only can you meet and connect with others while shopping, but you’ll also be supporting the local community members who own the business.
  • Get Involved in Local Government
    • You can attend your local town hall, school board meetings, or even join a local advocacy group. You can help directly contribute to making positive changes within your community.

What Can We All Do?

Community events bring people together.  Notice if these things are happening in your community and consider joining in as a participant or as a planner.

  • Block Parties
    • This can be a great way for neighbors of all ages and backgrounds to come together and build relationships. They’ll get to know people and help make the community safer. Plus, people will be proud to be a part of their neighborhood!
  • Skill Swaps
    • People within the community can offer to share their skills for free. These can be things like cooking, crafting, gardening, or anything they’re willing to share. It gives people the chance to learn from someone passionate about it. Do you have a skill you can share, or something you want to learn?
  • Book or Movie Clubs
    • These are a great way for people to talk over a similar interest. Members can build better communication skills and gain insights from the perspectives of others. Having regular meetings can give members something to look forward to.
  • Community Gardens
    • Community gardens bring people together to grow fresh food. It gives a combined sense of accomplishment and pride to everyone who takes part. These gardens can improve the look of the neighborhood with green and vibrant colors. Gardens also improve air quality and help local wildlife.

These are just a few ideas. What else do you see happening in your community?
